They are known with this famous quote "UTUMISHI KWA WOTE", the men in blue i call them. They have sacrificed their own responsibilities to protect our lives yet we disown them. We have set distance from them yet they need our love, care and support. They should be greatly applauded for.I wish to look on some the challenges they pass through in their daily routine and also possible solutions that can be of help.
The policemen have been living in a poor environment that you can't imagine. First let's look on their working conditions.Their working station are small, squeezed and jumbled up, not suite for work. Their uniforms are worn out and nobody seems to care. They cannot manage to fight crime because the criminals hold more sophisticated weapons than them instead they run away when they see them.
Lack of proper storage systems of important documents is also a major challenge to the police. In this century someone still uses books to keep records?.This has led to interference and mishandling of evidences. Proper technology should be kept in place and even embrace social media in combating crime.Introduction of computer system and IT training to the policemen is also in need.
What of their salaries? Paid peanuts yet they have big families to take care of. How do they survive? This is the reason why we see them standing on roads and asking you to "Toa Kitu Kidogo"(bribe).Patrol cars currently not working their hotline numbers not going through either because of poor mismanagement.
I would like to imagine how their homes are. I remember watching a police feature story on TV and it really shocked me the way this people live us not suitable for human beings. A one room house, shared by at least three families, that is the parents and their children. The rooms are small squeezed and with no privacy.
They have no water, poor drainage systems, leaking roofs, poor sanitary conditions it’s a very hazardous environment and a threat to human life. They have to find their own means to survive. Many of them have turned against the odd and now engage in criminal activities in our towns, some have participate in useful activities like farming in order to survive because they have bills to pay.
Police recruitments have always been termed to be unfair. With the growing numbers of jobless youths who take this career as their only hope that will give them a job. This practice has discouraged many since it has always received a magnanimous turnout. But because of corruption i.e bribe, nepotism it has taken change to ethnic selection and also one need to get connections to get the job. Its like this because the police have nothing to survive on and this is their only chance to "eat".
Their bosses drive Porsche cars with bodyguards around them, Big and well-furnished houses and have all the four course meal. Their lifestyle is opposite from their subordinates. They careless of young men and women who watch over our towns. They want to be saluted everywhere, and brag over nothing. They use their positions to harass others.
Heads must role and a chance given to other people who are willing to serve others with fairness. Someone is sleeping on his/her jobs and wants to feed on others sweat. Corruption is the only song they know. They have given the innocent policemen a bad name and yet it is a highly respected sector. It will be a lie if we say that the government is out of cash to run the security sector successfuly.Someone somewhere is sitting on this money and skimming on how to use it alone he must be accountable.
Policemen and Women should be given credit to what they have to their great country. Despite of all these challenges they have really tried to make it on their own means. The government has a major role in giving them full support. They should be paid well and also be given more allowances from house to medical. Without them i can't even imagine how our towns will become.Treat them as you would want you to be treated.
All of us wish them well and we hope the government will hear them and respond to their concerns. Actually we can't assume that their state is good but someone has to his job well. We want action to be taken "Kusema na kutenda'' as they say it, not "Kusema Na Kusema’’. The government should at least sympathize with their condition and try to seek a better solution for them.
