The Sweet Sour Deal ?

H.E. Hon Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, the president of kenya, recently signed a deal with the Ugandan president on the export of cheap sugar in Kenya. This has enveloped heated debates around the country and its all about  if it was really necessary to enter into the dea and if it was a personal agenda being pushed. The questions that should have be answered by the government.

The former prime minister of Kenya Raila Odinga was seen the first to question this act that has caused mixed reactions from both the government and the opposition parties. The opposition has it that the deal will kill the submerging sugar industries in the country and the president should have not have signed the deal without proper consultations. Some of the known sugar industries in Kenya are the Mumias sugar company,Sony sugar company,Chemelil sugar company and muhoroni sugar company which no longer perform like they used to years back.

They cannot produce anymore because they were purely mismanaged  due to corruption and  greedy sugar cartels coined around us.Sugar produced kenya is very little and cannot sustaine the whole country but this does give the president the opportunity to enter into a deal that will see our sugar industries fall. This sinister move will make our own sugar uncompetitive to the market.

Importing sugar from Uganda will mean that kenya will no longer be a sugar producing country. Farmers from the western and Nyanza region part of the country grows sugarcane as part of their cashcrop and as a source of income to them. This means that with the fall of the major sugar industries in kenya, these farmers will have no reason to grow sugarcane anymore. Therefore, they will not have a place to sell their sugarcane hence living them more frustrated and poor and even people employed in these industries will remain jobless.

The government should have helped in reviving these major sugar industries in kenya so as to produce more instead of thinking of important cheap sugar that will compete our own sugar. They should put the interest of kenya first. The sugar cartels are amongst us and they want to use this opportunity for their own intrest.

The opposition party have played their watchdog role fairly as provided by the constitution by asking tough questions to the government. It is time that both parties should listen to one another and not play politics around this important matter.

Indeed it was the wrong timing and kenya is not ready to import sugar from Uganda.Call a spade a spade the president got the wrong move this time. It's like quoting  our sugar "Tasteless".Soon we will no longer talk about Mumias sugar and Sony sugar.Kenyans should watch out this move.
